A Conversation with Art Lawyer Kate Lucas

  • Date: Wednesday, October 8th, 2025
  • Time: 5:00 pm
  • Location: Kirkpatrick Lecture Hall, Amherst College

Since its founding, the United States has recognized the importance of copyright law—but is copyright law ready for the new world of AI?  Art lawyer Kate Lucas will give an overview of how the rise of artificial intelligence is prompting (pun intended) new conversations—and litigation—about some of the most fundamental concepts in copyright law, including copyrightability, infringement, and fair use.

Drawing on recent cases, we’ll explore how the courts, creative industries, and tech companies are grappling with the awkward application of copyright law to this new technology (and its input and output), and what that all means for the uncomfortably-intertwined futures of human creativity and technological innovation.  Whether you’re interested in AI from the perspective of the creative arts, public policy, economics, or the tech itself, this is a conversation you should be paying attention to.
